As such, the two siblings attempt to keep the lights burning throughout the house however, a power outage results, causing the children to enter the basement in order to restart the generator. She began to manifest herself as a sentient shadow who could only be dispelled by light. Throughout the film, Becca and Martin attempt to free their mother of the malevolent spirit's power, which invokes Diana's wrath. Diana then manipulates Sophie into thinking that he left her. Later on, it is revealed that Diana also murdered the children's biological father when he was trying to get his wife stable. When Martin, his son, was informing him of Sophie going through one of her episodes, Diana kills him. Some years later, Sophie's husband, Paul was working late at night at a mannequin shop. ![]() Since then, her spirit had latched itself unto Sophie, and only appears when she would neglect to take her anti-depression medication. Unfortunately, the experiment went awry, and Diana was reduced to ashes. While at the mental hospital, Diana met and befriended a girl named Sophie, though as Sophie's daughter Becca pointed out, she most likely manipulated her mother into thinking that they were friends.Įventually, medical experiments were conducted on Diana intended to heal her skin. She was diagnosed with a skin condition that caused her to react negatively to light, and she suffered from violent tendencies. The film ends with the ghost girl turning the lights off, and presumably murdering the woman.Īt the age of 13, Diana was taken to a mental hospital after she had manipulated her father into killing himself via mind games. To the point where by the film's conclusion, scenes intended to fright are quite ineffective.The short film revolves around an unnamed woman (portrayed by Lotta Losten) being haunted by the spirit of a mysterious girl that only manifests in the absence of light. Diana certainly proves to be a creepy presence, however the longer the film goes on (and the more we see of her) the less terrifying she becomes. Unfortunately, the rest of the film never really matches the same level of terror. An early sequence in a warehouse that re-creates a scene from the short works really well and provides a great base for the film to build upon. Sandberg proves that he's got the chops for horror, building on the impressive short with some jumpy set pieces. She's also quite protective of Sophie and is prepared to go to extreme means (like murder) to protect their friendship. Turns out Diana is very real and is pals with her depressed mother, Sophie (Maria Bello). The resulting plot becomes about Rebecca (Palmer) who is forced to deal with literal ghosts from her past when she discovers that her little brother Martin (Gabriel Bateman) is beginning to see Diana, the same creepy monster lady that haunted her dreams as a child. Screenwriter Eric Heisserer was brought on board to flesh out a story to attach to the short's concept about a monster that can only be seen (and move around) in the dark. Sandberg and wife Lotta Losten's short film Lights Outwas spotted by James Wan (director of Saw, Insidious and The Conjuring) and soon the couple were upping sticks from their native Sweden and moving to Hollywood to develop Lights Out as a feature. ![]() You know you've got a pretty good concept for a horror movie when the two minute short that you entered into a festival and didn't even win ends up becoming a viral sensation and catching the attention of Hollywood. As she works to unlock the truth behind the terror she soon comes face to face with Diana, an entity that has an attachment to her depressed mother, Sophie (Maria Bello). Rebecca (Theresa Palmer) is forced to return home to her estranged family when her little brother Martin begins seeing the same ghost that tested her own sanity as a child.
